Istanbul named 3rd most popular travel destination in Europe

Istanbul, the most popular travel destination in Turkey, has been named as the 3rd favorite destination in the European continent of choice for international travelers following London and Paris, showed MasterCard’s Target Cities Index.

With around 11.6 million anticipated visitors for 2014-end, this city in Turkey also ranks 7th across the world, as per the list which is topped by London for the 3rd time in last 4 years with 18.37 million visitors.

The index is now in its 4th year and it offer a ranking of the hundred and thirty two most traveled places from across the world. Istanbul, Turkey’s most-populated and largest city that hosted 9.87 million visitors last year, is said to record a 17.5% growth at this year's end and it is expected to rank top in visitor development rate, said a statement by MasterCard Turkey.

Istanbul is the fastest developing city between the year 2009 and 2014 in terms of travelers coming by flight, is anticipated to overtake Paris, the France capital, as the 2nd top favorite Euro place by the year 2016 if it preserves the 104.6% level of 5 year growth.

As per the Culture and Tourism Provincial Directorate’s tourism stats, already Istanbul has hosted 5.38 million travelers in the first 6 months of the year, noting a 9% rise from the similar time of last year. The place also ranks 4th in the European continent in terms of travelers spending, as visitors coming to Istanbul are anticipated spend US$ 9.38 billion, meaning US$ 1351 of income per resident of Istanbul.
